Boccara proudly presents the tapestry Femme au miroir by Joan Miró. This tapestry showcases the iconic surrealist style of the 20th century master; his symbolic, biomorphic language and childlike playfulness, combined with bold linework and vibrant colors, are instantly recognizable. Miró rejected naturalism and depth in his work, instead embracing dream-like imagery and unconventional forms.
In Femme au miroir, an abstracted female figure appears on the left, her femininity conveyed through curvaceous lines and whimsical hair. To the right, Miró depicts a mirror; this entire scene is bathed in blue with a black border. The border, filled with Miró’s signature biomorphic shapes and figures, initially draws the viewer’s attention inwards. However, the placement of lines and symbols throughout encourages further contemplation, sparking a sense of childlike discovery as one recognizes and associates the forms with their own perspectives.
This was largely due to Miró’s incorporation of “psychic automatism” – allowing the unconscious mind to guide his creativity and enabling infinite interpretations and feelings to arise, both for himself and the viewer.
Femme au miroir was woven in 2024, based on Miro’s original design made from 1946-1956. It is in perfect condition, expertly woven in the Aubusson tradition with the artist’s signature woven into the lower right hand corner, and an Atelier Pinton bolduc attached to the back. This tapestry is the first in an edition of eight.
