L’Hirondelle Amour – A Tapestry Masterpiece

Joan Miró’s L’Hirondelle Amour masterfully merges modernist abstraction with the rich tradition of tapestry weaving. Originally created as a painting in 1933—now part of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) collection in New York—this composition has been reinterpreted as a textile artwork, adding depth and texture to Miró’s distinctive style.

In 1974, Nelson Rockefeller commissioned the first tapestry edition, seeking to transform his beloved painting into a woven masterpiece. Collaborating with the skilled artisans of Aubusson, Miró oversaw the intricate adaptation, ensuring that his flowing, dreamlike shapes translated seamlessly into fabric. The title, meaning “swallow” in French, is reflected in the tapestry’s sweeping, energetic forms, reminiscent of birds in flight.

Boccara Gallery is privileged to showcase the latest edition of L’Hirondelle Amour, produced through an exclusive partnership with ADAGP, the Mobilier National, and Pinton Manufacture. This initiative marks a significant moment in contemporary tapestry-making, continuing Miró’s influence in textile arts.

Limited to only eight numbered editions, each tapestry bears the official insignia of ADAGP, the Mobilier National, and Pinton, ensuring authenticity and historical importance. This revival of the esteemed French tapestry tradition forges a connection between heritage and modernity.

Joan Punyet Miró, the artist’s grandson, has praised this project as “extraordinary.” Expertly woven by Atelier Pinton, the tapestry captures Miró’s signature movement, biomorphic forms, and poetic abstraction, affirming that textiles were an essential part of his artistic expression.

Boccara Gallery invites you to experience L’Hirondelle Amour—a stunning artwork that unites modernist painting with the time-honored legacy of Aubusson weaving.
