Sillons Noirs Sur Rouge is an excellent example of Calder’s classic exploration of bold geometric forms, compositional orchestration and animated movement – all of these elements are beautifully woven together in this rare tapestry, produced by Alexander Calder during his lifetime. By the 1970’s there was a growing appreciation of African and South American art that we can see within the line work of this piece, creating a strong visual appearance of spatial movement; the red elements exude balance while simultaneously providing a sense of weight within the movement, exaggerated by the choice of a thicker pile. It is in excellent condition, I have never seen a tapestry by Calder of this magnitude and detail. It is truly a museum quality piece.
