Le sommet is a monumental tapestry by Mathieu Matégot, woven in 1970 by Atelier Pinton in Aubusson, and stands among the most architecturally ambitious expressions of his abstract language. At over three meters in height, the work commands space with a presence that is both physical and atmospheric, transforming the wall into a landscape of tension, ascent, and light.

The composition evokes the idea of a mountain peak—not through literal depiction, but through a carefully orchestrated balance of contrasting forms and color fields. One side of the tapestry is anchored in darker, denser tones, creating a sense of weight and shadow. Opposite, a more luminous palette of yellows, greens, and earthy browns opens the composition, suggesting light, elevation, and shifting terrain. At the center, a vivid orange-red triangular form emerges as a focal point, reading simultaneously as summit, sun, or point of culmination.

Matégot’s approach is rooted in abstraction, yet deeply connected to natural sensation. Rather than describing a landscape, he translates the experience of it—the tension of ascent, the contrast between light and shadow, the instability of terrain—into a visual structure. Angular divisions and layered planes guide the eye upward and across the surface, reinforcing the sense of movement inherent in the title.

The woven medium plays a critical role in this effect. The surface is animated by textured, brush-like passages, where variations in wool density and direction mimic the spontaneity of painted gesture. This gives the tapestry a dynamic, almost painterly quality, allowing light to catch differently across the composition and enhancing its sense of depth.

Produced in a limited edition of six and bearing the artist’s woven signature, Le sommet also benefits from distinguished provenance, having come from the private French collection of Didier Marien. It reflects Matégot’s broader legacy as a designer whose works were commissioned for major international institutions, including the Bank for International Settlements in Basel and the National Library of Australia.

Both monumental and expressive, Le sommet captures Matégot’s ability to merge abstraction with atmosphere—creating a tapestry that is not only seen, but experienced.
