ORIGINS & VISION
About the Artist
From the Streets of Harlem to the Paris Avant-Garde
John Andrew Perello was born in 1963 in Harlem, New York, to Dominican parents. Growing up in the epicenter of the early graffiti movement, he began tagging the walls and metro cars of his neighborhood at the age of seventeen. As a self-taught artist, his early work was a direct response to the energy of hip-hop and the grit of the urban landscape. However, his trajectory shifted permanently in 1987 when he moved to Paris. Immersed in the European art scene and collaborating with street art pioneers like Speedy Graphito, JonOne began to transition his “freestyle” energy from the street to the canvas, eventually achieving international acclaim for his high-octane, painterly style.
The Philosophy of Freestyle
JonOne’s work is characterized by an absolute rejection of limits. He advocates for “freestyle”—a concept where the canvas is treated as a space for total liberation. In his paintings, the empty space or “the white” is non-existent; every inch is filled with layers of gestural strokes, drips, and tags that create a dense, vibrating surface. His palette is rich and deep, utilizing tones that reveal subtle nuances and harmonious compositions. While his work appears spontaneous, it is governed by a precise control of symmetry, repetition, and unity. Each piece is an abstract improvisation intended to transmit a contagious sense of vitality.
The Artistic Rug Collection: A Tactile Improvisation
In collaboration with Didier Marien and the master weavers of Atelier Boccara, JonOne’s visual language has found a new, three-dimensional home. The “Artistic Rug” collection takes his complex geometries and explosive colors and reimagines them through the ancient craft of the loom. These are not merely decorative objects but extensions of his paintings, where the texture of the material adds a new layer of depth to his strokes. By using New Zealand silk for its brilliant sheen and Egyptian wool for its structural density, the workshop is able to recreate the brilliance and nuanced contrasts of his original palettes.
Bespoke Customization for the Modern Collector
A hallmark of the JonOne collection at Boccara is its total flexibility. Recognizing that his “freestyle” philosophy should extend to the environment it inhabits, the gallery offers a comprehensive bespoke service. Designers and collectors can work with the atelier to customize the dimensions and adjust the color balance of each rug. This allows the controlled chaos of JonOne’s strokes to harmonize perfectly with the specific light and scale of a private residence or public installation, ensuring that the work remains a vibrant focal point that brings the “joy of life” to the floor.
