ORIGINS & VISION
About the Artist
Benjamin Ewing: A Multidisciplinary Vision
Benjamin Ewing is a Portland, Oregon-based artist whose work is defined by a rigorous investigation into the relationship between visual composition and human emotion. Ewing’s artistic journey began in his early teens, where he experimented with large-scale stencils and panel work. By the age of 15, he was already immersed in the world of professional photography and print design. This early exposure to the technicalities of post-production and film photography provided him with a unique visual language that informs his current practice across oil painting, stone sculpture, and lighting design.
A Foundation in Editorial Precision
Ewing’s background in editorial photography remains the cornerstone of his aesthetic. His work is characterized by an obsession with the value of light and its role in defining form and space. Drawing from post-production color theory, he utilizes a palette that focuses on the dramatic dualities of light and shadow. For Ewing, the transition from the camera lens to the canvas or the chisel is a search for freedom—a way to challenge the viewer’s perspective and create a dialogue between different materials. His work has been exhibited internationally in cultural hubs such as Paris, Copenhagen, Mexico City, and New York, with prominent installations in locations like the Century Plaza Hotel and the Dries Van Noten boutique in Los Angeles.
The Atelier Boccara Collaboration: Art Beyond the Surface
The collaboration between Benjamin Ewing and Atelier Boccara represents a significant evolution of his monochromatic vision. Under the direction of Didier Marien, these artistic rugs are developed through a process where the artist maintains total control over the creative arc. These works are not intended to be simple reproductions of his paintings; rather, they are autonomous art objects hand-knotted within our specialized workshop.
By utilizing a sophisticated combination of Egyptian wool and New Zealand silk, Atelier Boccara replicates the subtle gradations and textural depth of Ewing’s black and white designs. The inherent sheen of the silk mirrors the play of light found in his photography, while the structural weight of the wool grounds his abstract forms. Because these pieces are produced in-house, Atelier Boccara offers unparalleled customization options, allowing clients to tailor the dimensions and materials to their specific interior needs. This collaboration ensures that the intersection of contemporary art and functional luxury remains both technically precise and deeply personal.
