About the Artist
A Legacy of Luminous Abstraction
Jean-Paul Agosti, working under the pseudonym Malel, is a pivotal figure in contemporary French sacred art whose practice is rooted in a visual language that seeks to capture the intangible qualities of natural light and atmosphere. Influenced by his extensive work with stained glass, Malel’s compositions often feel as though they are illuminated from behind. His art is a fixture in public and religious spaces throughout France, where he uses color not just as an aesthetic choice, but as a central element of the spiritual experience. His work frequently navigates the boundary between human design and the organic, unpredictable patterns found in landscapes and gardens.
The Garden as Abstract Environment
A recurring theme in Malel’s work is the garden, viewed as a space of both cultivation and wild energy. In his textile designs, the idea of the garden is explored through fields of vibrant color and rhythmic, fragmented shapes that evoke the sensation of light filtering through foliage or the shifting air of a landscape without relying on literal representation. This interplay between structured movement and painterly spontaneity reflects Malel’s broader interest in “rhythmic harmony,” which is the balance between the artist’s hand and the natural forces he seeks to interpret.
The Atelier 3 Collaboration: Weaving the Radiance
To translate Malel’s delicate tonal shifts and “glowing” effects into wool, the master weavers at Atelier 3 utilize a highly sophisticated, interpretive technique. Because the workshop specializes in “front-weaving” without mechanical diagrams, the weavers can adjust fiber density and color blending directly at the loom. This process allows the wool to diffuse color softly, replicating the luminous quality of Malel’s stained-glass projects. The resulting surface is richly textured and reactive to light, ensuring that the work maintains a sense of quiet movement and visual depth.
Luminous Visions: Standout Works
The Boccara collection features two exemplary limited-edition tapestries that highlight the breadth of Malel’s vision. Jardin de Denis captures the vitality of a cultivated landscape through a wide spectrum of greens, golds, and warm tones, where radiating lines suggest the movement of sunlight through branches. In contrast, Louange du soir (Evening Praise) reflects Malel’s interest in spiritual reflection through a vertically-oriented composition that transitions from deep, grounding tones at the base to warmer shades of gold and pale light at the top. These works, produced in strictly limited editions of four, demonstrate how contemporary weaving can achieve an architectural presence that transforms the woven surface into a field of profound color and spiritual resonance.
