Jardin de Denis

The Jardin de Denis tapestry continues the exploration of light and atmosphere that characterizes the work of the French artist Malel, the professional name of Jean-Paul Agosti. Born in 1948, Agosti has developed a visual language rooted in luminous abstraction, often inspired by landscapes, gardens, and the shifting qualities of natural light. His artistic practice extends across painting, stained glass, and monumental textile works, many of which appear in churches and public architectural spaces throughout France.

In Jardin de Denis, the composition evokes the idea of a garden not through literal representation but through a field of vibrant color and rhythmic structure. Radiating lines and fragmented shapes spread across the surface, suggesting foliage, sunlight, and movement within a cultivated landscape. The colors move through a wide spectrum of greens, golds, and warmer tones, creating the sensation of light filtering through leaves and branches. This interplay between structure and spontaneity reflects Agosti’s interest in the balance between human design and the unpredictable patterns found in nature.

Handwoven in wool by Atelier 3 in Paris, the work translates Agosti’s painterly composition into a richly textured woven surface. The weavers interpret the gradations of color directly at the loom, adjusting tone and fiber density to reproduce the subtle shifts of light within the design. This process allows the wool to diffuse color softly, creating a luminous effect across the textile.

Produced in a limited edition of four examples, the Jardin de Denis tapestry presents a radiant interpretation of landscape and light. Its layered colors and structured movement create a sense of vitality across the woven surface, transforming the idea of a garden into an abstract environment filled with energy and color.
