The Louange du soir tapestry reflects the luminous abstract language of the French artist Malel, the pseudonym of Jean-Paul Agosti. Born in 1948, Agosti is known for a body of work that often explores themes of light, atmosphere, and spiritual reflection. His paintings, stained-glass projects, and monumental installations frequently appear in churches and public spaces throughout France, where color and radiance become central elements of the visual experience.

In Louange du soir, the composition unfolds vertically through a gradual transition of color. Deep tones near the base of the tapestry shift upward into warmer shades of gold and pale light, evoking the changing atmosphere of the evening sky. Rather than relying on sharply defined forms, the image is built through subtle gradations and layered fields of color that appear to glow from within. This treatment of light gives the composition a sense of quiet movement, encouraging the viewer’s eye to travel slowly upward through the surface.

The tapestry was handwoven in wool by Atelier 3 in Paris, a workshop recognized for translating contemporary artworks into richly textured woven form. Through careful control of color and density, the weavers recreate the delicate tonal shifts present in Malel’s design, allowing the fibers to soften and diffuse the transitions between hues. This process gives the tapestry a luminous quality that recalls the artist’s interest in stained glass and illuminated surfaces.

Produced in a limited edition of four examples, Louange du soir demonstrates how contemporary tapestry can convey both visual depth and architectural presence. The composition’s upward movement and radiant color create a calm, contemplative atmosphere, transforming the woven surface into a field of light and color.
