Created in 1970, Le Peintre reflects Joan Miró’s late artistic language, where his familiar symbols become larger, bolder, and more expressive. Unlike earlier works that rely on small floating shapes, this composition introduces a powerful central figure that dominates the surface.
The title translates to “The Painter,” and the design can be read as a sort of symbolic self-portrait. At the center stands a monumental figure defined by Miró’s signature black lines. The large circular head, marked by a single eye, suggests the watchful presence of the artist observing and shaping the world around him.
The composition is built around a limited but striking palette. A deep red form anchors the body of the figure, while touches of blue and black create visual rhythm across the pale ground. Miró’s loose, gestural lines give the design a sense of movement, reflecting the increasingly expressive style he developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
This rug was produced in Paris through the collaboration between Marie Cuttoli and Galerie Lucie Weill, whose workshops were responsible for many of the most important modern artist textiles of the twentieth century. Le Peintre belongs to the final phase of Miró’s partnership with Cuttoli, making it one of the later examples of this celebrated collaboration.
Hand-knotted in wool and preserved in excellent condition, Le Peintre carries the strong graphic presence of Miró’s mature work. The vertical composition and commanding figure give the rug an almost architectural character, allowing it to function not only as a textile but as a large-scale work of modern art within an interior space.
