Serpent Noir is a tapestry by Sonia Delaunay, woven in December 1971 at the Atelier Pinton in Aubusson. Based on an early composition from 1913, the work reflects a key moment in her development of abstraction, later translated into textile with clarity and scale.
The composition is organized around a continuous, undulating form that moves horizontally across the surface. This central element is not enclosed or fixed; it expands and contracts as it progresses, creating a sense of movement that defines the entire work. Rather than acting as a figure within a background, it becomes the structure of the composition itself.
Color is reduced to a limited palette—primarily black, white, and red—allowing contrast to carry the image. These tones are placed with precision, creating rhythm through repetition and variation. The absence of additional color heightens the intensity of the composition, focusing attention on the interaction between form and movement.
The geometry remains flexible. Curved and angular segments alternate along the length of the form, producing a visual cadence that unfolds gradually rather than resolving in a single point. This approach reflects Delaunay’s early exploration of simultaneity, where color and shape are inseparable.
At this scale, the tapestry emphasizes continuity. The elongated format reinforces the lateral movement, encouraging the viewer to follow the composition across its full length rather than taking it in all at once.
Serpent Noir is both direct and foundational. It brings one of Delaunay’s early abstract ideas into a fully realized textile form, where rhythm, contrast, and movement are distilled to their essentials.
