The Design N.62 rug presents a more figurative dimension of Albert Gleizes’s work, where abstraction and representation coexist within a carefully structured composition. While Gleizes is best known for his role in developing Cubism, his later works often explored the integration of the human form within geometric systems. In this design, a stylized female figure emerges at the center, subtly embedded within the surrounding arrangement of shapes.

The figure is defined by a striking silhouette—her face and elongated neck rendered in deep black—creating a strong visual anchor within the composition. Rather than standing apart from the structure, she becomes part of it, her form echoing the surrounding lines and curves. This integration gives her an almost symbolic presence, as if she exists within the rhythm of the composition rather than outside it. The result is a figure that feels both human and abstract, resembling an instrument or structural element within the larger visual field.

The palette is composed primarily of soft, neutral tones—beiges and light browns—layered with subtle variations that create depth without heaviness. Accents of muted blue and gentle coral introduce moments of contrast, adding warmth and balance while maintaining an overall sense of restraint. These color relationships reinforce the harmony between figure and ground, allowing the composition to feel unified and fluid.

Handwoven in wool and natural silk, the rug brings a tactile richness to the design. The interplay between matte and luminous fibers enhances the silhouette of the figure and the surrounding forms, allowing the composition to shift subtly with changing light. This material translation softens the geometry while preserving the clarity of Gleizes’s structure.

Produced in a limited edition of eight by Atelier Boccara, Design N.62 features a woven signature and numbering integrated into the composition. Customizable in material, dimensions, and color palette, it offers flexibility while maintaining the balance between figuration and abstraction that defines this work.
