The Ciel de vent tapestry reflects the expressive abstract language of French painter Huguette Arthur Bertrand, a significant figure associated with the postwar movement known as Art Informel. Born in 1920, Bertrand developed a highly gestural approach to painting that emphasized spontaneity, movement, and the physical act of mark-making. Her work emerged alongside the broader European exploration of abstraction during the 1950s, when artists sought new ways to express emotion and energy through unstructured form.

Rather than presenting a literal depiction of the sky, Ciel de vent evokes the sensation of shifting air currents and atmospheric movement. Sweeping gestures and dynamic lines move across the composition, creating a sense of turbulence and rhythm that recalls the force of wind passing through open space. The composition balances dense clusters of darker tones with lighter, more open areas, allowing the image to breathe while maintaining a strong sense of internal energy.

Handwoven in wool by Atelier 3 in Paris, the tapestry translates Bertrand’s energetic painterly gestures into a richly textured woven surface. Through careful variation in color and weaving density, the workshop recreates the expressive qualities of the original composition while giving the work the depth and warmth unique to textile. The interlacing threads allow the colors to shift subtly across the surface, reinforcing the impression of movement suggested by the sweeping lines.

The Ciel de vent tapestry demonstrates how the expressive language of postwar abstraction can be transformed into a monumental textile form. Its dynamic composition and tactile surface create a powerful visual presence, bringing both movement and atmosphere into the architectural space where it is displayed.
