Eaux Libres is a mature tapestry by Jean Lurçat, woven at the Atelier Pinton in Aubusson. The work moves beyond descriptive imagery, presenting a constructed, almost theatrical vision of the sea—less a landscape than a system of relationships between natural elements.

The composition is contained within a strong ochre border, which frames the scene like a stage. Inside, the atmosphere shifts immediately: a dark ground sets the tone for a nocturnal, underwater world where forms emerge with clarity against the surrounding depth. The contrast between the structured frame and the fluid interior creates a tension that carries through the entire piece.

Movement is organized along a central vertical axis. This spine-like form anchors the composition, connecting the lower register—where plant and aquatic forms gather—to the upper space, where energy disperses. Around it, fish drift in a calmer rhythm, balanced against more active, swirling elements on the opposite side.

One of the most distinctive features appears at the right edge: a crescent moon with a human profile releasing a stream of blue droplets into the scene. It’s a subtle but effective gesture, suggesting a connection between celestial cycles and the movement of water below. On the left, a more turbulent formation—dense, star-filled, and expansive—introduces a counterpoint, hinting at a different state of the same element.

Rather than resolving these contrasts, Lurçat allows them to coexist. Eaux Libres reads as a composition in balance—structured yet fluid, controlled yet open—where sea, sky, and growth are treated as part of a single, continuous field.
