El Mansour (The Victorious) is a concentrated and energetic tapestry by Jean Lurçat, woven at the Tabard Frères workshop in Aubusson around 1955. The work centers on a single rooster figure, treated here with greater intensity and vertical emphasis than in his more expansive compositions.

The format is narrow and upright, giving the figure a totemic presence. The rooster stands firmly within the field, its posture direct and contained, while the surrounding elements create a sense of movement around it. This contrast between stability and activity defines the composition.

The plumage is rendered in sharp, fragmented shapes that shift between deep blues, warm oranges, and bright yellows. These transitions are abrupt rather than blended, allowing the color to carry energy across the surface. The tail in particular extends outward in jagged forms, breaking the boundary of the central figure and activating the surrounding space.

Within the body, circular and patterned elements suggest layered structure rather than surface detail. These internal forms echo outward into the background, where leaf-like shapes and small star motifs create a continuous field of activity. The space around the figure is not empty—it participates in the composition, reinforcing the sense that the image is in motion.

The darker ground provides contrast without flattening the image. Instead, it allows the brighter elements to hold their intensity, keeping the composition legible even at a distance.

El Mansour is compact but forceful. It distills Lurçat’s rooster motif into a tighter, more focused composition, where color, form, and rhythm are concentrated into a single, assertive image.
