Grosse Tête reflects the bold and symbolic visual language of Venezuelan artist Oswaldo Vigas, one of the leading figures of Latin American modernism. Throughout his career, Vigas developed a distinctive style that merges modernist abstraction with references to pre-Columbian mythology, Afro-Caribbean traditions, and ancestral symbolism. His compositions are often populated by powerful, mask-like figures and expressive forms that evoke ritual, spirituality, and cultural memory.

This tapestry translates Vigas’s striking imagery into woven form, preserving the dramatic energy and layered symbolism of the original composition. The monumental central figure, rendered through bold lines and rich color contrasts, reflects the artist’s fascination with mythic archetypes and the expressive power of the human face.

The work was handwoven in wool by Atelier 3 in Paris, a workshop known for its collaborations with contemporary artists and its commitment to innovative tapestry production. Rather than mechanically reproducing the design, the weavers carefully interpret the artist’s composition at the loom, allowing the texture and tonal variations of wool to bring additional depth and vitality to the image.

Produced in a small edition of four examples, Grosse Tête demonstrates how contemporary tapestry can extend the language of painting into a tactile, architectural medium. The square format and strong visual presence give the work a commanding scale, allowing Vigas’s symbolic forms to unfold across the woven surface with clarity and intensity.
