L’invention de la parenthèse reflects the expressive visual language of Belgian artist Pierre Alechinsky, one of the most distinctive figures associated with the avant-garde CoBrA movement. Alechinsky’s work often blends elements of medieval illustration, folk traditions, and comic-like narrative structures. His compositions feel spontaneous and animated, filled with symbols and fluid lines that seem to evolve across the surface. As the artist once remarked, the forms that appear in his work are not chosen but discovered through the act of painting itself.

The tapestry was handwoven in wool by the artisans of Atelier 3, a contemporary workshop founded in 1972 with the goal of expanding the possibilities of modern tapestry. Rather than relying strictly on rigid pattern charts, the weavers work closely with the original artwork, translating color, gesture, and rhythm into woven form. This approach allows the tapestry to retain the energy of Alechinsky’s composition while introducing the texture and depth unique to the medium.

Produced as a unique work, L’invention de la parenthèse demonstrates how contemporary tapestry can function as both artwork and craft. The large scale gives the composition a strong architectural presence, allowing Alechinsky’s vivid lines and shapes to unfold across the woven surface with clarity and movement.
