Monumental II is an exceptional tapestry by Sonia Delaunay, woven in 1971 by the renowned Pinton workshop in Felletin, Aubusson. Executed in a rare edition of six, this large-scale work represents one of the most complete expressions of Delaunay’s artistic language, bringing together her exploration of color, rhythm, and geometric abstraction in a singular, commanding composition.

Delaunay developed a distinctive visual vocabulary rooted in the principles of Simultanism—her theory of color relationships as a means of creating movement and emotional resonance. In Monumental II, this approach reaches a heightened level of clarity and complexity. Interlocking shapes, arcs, and fragmented forms unfold across the surface, creating a composition that is both structured and fluid. The eye is guided through a continuous visual rhythm, where no single element dominates, but each contributes to a balanced and unified whole.

Color remains central to the work’s impact. Delaunay’s carefully orchestrated palette creates a dynamic interplay between contrast and harmony, allowing the composition to shift subtly as it is experienced. The scale of the tapestry amplifies this effect, immersing the viewer within the composition and reinforcing its architectural presence.

The translation into tapestry enhances the depth and vitality of the design. Pinton’s weaving preserves the precision of Delaunay’s forms while introducing a material richness unique to wool. Variations in texture and density create a nuanced surface, where light interacts with the fibers to produce subtle tonal shifts and added dimensionality.

Signed within the composition and bearing the Pinton monogram, Monumental II is further distinguished by its strong provenance, including an American private collection, Christie’s in March 2024, and the Didier Marien collection. The work is also well documented in major publications and exhibitions, with comparable examples reproduced in key references on Delaunay’s oeuvre.

Preserved in perfect condition, Monumental II stands as a definitive example of Delaunay’s work in textile. Its scale, clarity, and compositional strength position it as a culmination of her lifelong exploration of color and abstraction—an immersive and enduring work that fully realizes the potential of tapestry as a modern artistic medium.
