At this year’s The Winter Show, Boccara is pleased to present Sonia Delaunay’s Les jeux d’enfants (1975), an exceptional Aubusson tapestry that reflects the artist’s lifelong engagement with color as a source of rhythm, movement, and emotion. Based on an abstract design conceived in 1969 and woven several years later by the esteemed Atelier Pinton in Aubusson, the work belongs to Delaunay’s mature period and exemplifies her foundational role in the Orphist movement. Through an interplay of curved and geometric forms in saturated primary and secondary colors, the composition evokes the spontaneity suggested by its title while remaining fully abstract, allowing color itself to act as the central subject.
The translation of this design into tapestry highlights the natural harmony between Delaunay’s visual language and textile form. Wool lends the composition a softness and depth that encourages close viewing, while the subtle variations of the weave animate the surface and enhance the sense of movement. Delaunay believed that modern art should exist beyond the confines of the wall and be fully integrated into everyday life, and Les jeux d’enfants embodies that philosophy with quiet confidence.
