Contrepoint is a tapestry by Sonia Delaunay, woven at the Pinton workshop in Felletin around 1970. The work reflects her mature exploration of simultaneity, where color relationships generate movement, structure, and visual rhythm without reliance on representation.

The composition is organized around a series of expanding, semi-circular arcs that anchor the surface. These curved forms radiate outward, creating a sense of continuous motion rather than fixed geometry. The structure feels active, as if unfolding across the tapestry rather than being contained within it.

This movement is reinforced through contrast. Warm tones—reds and oranges—are placed directly against cooler greens and deep blues, producing a visual tension that animates the entire surface. Rather than blending, these colors remain distinct, allowing their interaction to create a subtle vibration.

The composition is deliberately asymmetrical. One side is dominated by curvature, while the other introduces more vertical, structured bands of color. This imbalance prevents the eye from settling, maintaining a constant sense of circulation across the work.

Delaunay’s approach is precise. Each color field is sharply defined, preserving the clarity of her design. The Pinton weavers translate this with accuracy, maintaining flat, saturated areas of color that retain their intensity across the surface.

Contrepoint stands as a clear expression of Delaunay’s visual language at its height. It demonstrates how color alone—through contrast, placement, and proportion—can construct a composition that is both structured and in motion.
