Envol (Flight) is a late tapestry by Emile Gilioli, created in 1970 and woven in Aubusson. The work reflects a distilled phase of his practice, where form is reduced to its essential elements and composition is driven by direction rather than mass.
The format is notably vertical, immediately establishing a sense of upward movement. The composition is built from a sequence of stacked geometric forms that rise through the surface in a steady progression. These elements interlock without overlapping, creating a continuous path that guides the eye from the base to the top.
At the lower edge, darker tones provide a sense of weight and grounding. As the composition moves upward, lighter and more saturated colors—particularly reds and yellows—begin to emerge. This shift creates a subtle transition, where the composition moves from density toward lightness without losing its structural clarity.
The edges of each form are sharply defined, reinforcing the precision of the design. There is little variation within each plane, allowing the composition to rely on contrast and placement rather than texture or detail.
There is no central focal point. Instead, the entire work functions as a single directional movement, where each element contributes to the overall ascent. The repetition of form creates rhythm, while the vertical alignment maintains stability throughout.
Envol is direct and highly controlled. It translates Gilioli’s sculptural language into textile, using proportion, alignment, and contrast to create a composition that is both minimal and deliberate.
