Fenêtre (Window) is a late tapestry by Emile Gilioli, woven in Aubusson around 1970. The work reflects a pared-down approach, where the composition is built through contrast, proportion, and the suggestion of depth within a strictly geometric framework.
The image is organized as a contained structure. Dark tones—charcoal greys and deep indigos—form a surrounding field that reads as a frame, holding the composition in place. Within this space, a series of lighter vertical elements emerge, creating a clear contrast between interior and exterior.
These central forms are rendered in white and pale blue, arranged in overlapping planes that suggest layering without relying on perspective. Their vertical alignment draws the eye upward, while subtle shifts in tone give them a sense of separation from the darker ground.
A single horizontal element in red interrupts the composition near the lower section. This addition is minimal but deliberate, introducing a point of tension that stabilizes the otherwise vertical movement. It anchors the composition without distracting from its overall clarity.
Edges remain precise throughout, reinforcing the architectural quality of the design. Each plane is clearly defined, allowing the composition to hold together through structure rather than detail.
Fenêtre is restrained and controlled. It reduces the composition to a few essential elements, using contrast and placement to create a sense of depth and balance within a limited visual language.
