Created in 1984, Promenade des Amis brings the playful world of Diego Giacometti into textile form. Known for the poetic animal figures that appear throughout his bronze furniture, Giacometti translated the same imagery here into a wool rug where dogs, birds, and other small creatures move across an open field.

Diego Giacometti (1902–1985) spent much of his career working alongside his brother Alberto, but gradually developed a distinctive artistic language of his own. His work often combined simple architectural lines with delicate animal forms, creating objects that felt both structured and whimsical. In Promenade des Amis, those familiar motifs appear almost like drawings across the surface of the rug.

The composition was designed to echo the shadow of one of Giacometti’s bronze tables cast across a floor. Dark linear elements form a loose framework, while the animals wander through the open space, creating a sense of quiet movement and lightness. The effect reflects what many collectors describe as Giacometti’s ability to bring “poetry” into functional objects.

The rug was produced in Paris in an edition of 100, with additional artist’s proofs, and published by Sedcome—the same editor responsible for several important modern artist rugs of the period. It bears the woven “D/G” marking on the reverse.

Preserved in perfect condition, Promenade des Amis captures the spirit of Giacometti’s late work. The design transforms his sculptural imagination into a surface that feels both graphic and lyrical, carrying the charm of his bronze bestiary into the warmth of wool.
