The Design N.55 rug captures the vibrant, rhythmic language of Manuel Cargaleiro, one of Portugal’s most celebrated modern artists. Known for his deep engagement with color, pattern, and movement, Cargaleiro developed a visual vocabulary rooted in both modern abstraction and the rich decorative traditions of Portuguese azulejos. This design reflects that dual influence, balancing structure with a sense of fluid, almost musical motion.
The composition is defined by an intricate network of linear elements that traverse the surface in shifting directions. These lines—rendered in tones of blue, red, and white—interact across a luminous gold-toned ground, creating a dynamic field that feels both structured and spontaneous. Rather than forming rigid geometry, the lines overlap and intersect in a way that suggests continuous movement, as if the composition is unfolding in time.
The use of gold as a dominant field introduces a sense of warmth and radiance, elevating the composition beyond pure abstraction into something more atmospheric. This luminous background enhances the intensity of the colored lines, allowing them to appear suspended within the surface. The contrast between the grounded gold tones and the cooler blues creates a visual balance that is both energetic and refined.
Handwoven in wool, the rug translates this complexity into a tactile medium that enhances both depth and movement. The density of the weave gives weight to the composition, while subtle variations in texture allow the surface to respond to light. This interaction reinforces the sense of rhythm that defines Cargaleiro’s work, making the piece feel active and alive within a space.
Produced in a limited edition of eight by Atelier Boccara, Design N.55 features a woven signature integrated into the design. Its large square format allows it to function as a central architectural element within an interior, offering both visual impact and material presence while remaining true to Cargaleiro’s distinctive approach to color and composition.
