The Design N.63 rug reflects Albert Gleizes’s mature Cubist language, where structure, color, and fragmentation are brought into a carefully balanced composition. Rooted in his theoretical approach to painting, this design demonstrates his interest in organizing space through contrast and rhythm rather than strict symmetry.
The composition is divided into two dominant color fields—lavender tones on the left and olive green on the right—creating a subtle but deliberate tension across the surface. Between these two zones, a central band of fragmented forms acts as a transitional space, composed of layered neutrals and muted purples that soften the boundary while maintaining visual complexity. This division gives the work a sense of duality, where opposing tonal atmospheres coexist within a single unified structure.
Within this central field, Gleizes introduces moments of heightened contrast through patterned elements. Areas of deep black punctuated with white dots, alongside lighter passages marked with darker accents, create a dynamic interplay that interrupts the softness of the surrounding palette. These patterned forms function almost as visual anchors, adding rhythm and drawing the eye across the composition in a series of subtle movements.
The overall structure suggests a stylized figure or vertical presence embedded within the composition, though it remains abstracted and integrated into the surrounding geometry. This balance between figuration and abstraction is characteristic of Gleizes’s work from this period, where recognizable forms are absorbed into a broader system of planes and relationships.
Handwoven in wool and natural silk, the rug enhances the depth and tonal variation of the design. The contrast between matte and luminous fibers allows the lavender and olive fields to shift gently with light, while the patterned elements retain their graphic clarity. Produced in a limited edition of eight by Atelier Boccara, Design N.63 features a woven signature and numbering integrated into the composition, and can be customized in material, dimensions, and color palette while preserving its structural balance and chromatic tension.
