Les empreintes is a tapestry by Brassaï, woven around 1970 at the Paris atelier of Yvette Cauquil-Prince. Known primarily for his photography, Brassaï extends his visual language here into textile, translating surface, light, and trace into a materially rich composition.
The structure is centered on two handprints, rendered in deep blue. These forms are direct and immediate, standing in sharp contrast to the surrounding field. Their placement introduces a strong focal point while maintaining a sense of restraint, allowing the composition to remain open and balanced.
The background is built through layered tones of beige, brown, and blue. Rather than functioning as a flat ground, it carries a mottled, irregular quality that suggests erosion, stone, or worn surfaces. This treatment echoes the textures Brassaï captured in his photographs of urban walls and graffiti, where marks accumulate over time.
The relationship between the central forms and the field is essential. The handprints appear both embedded within and emerging from the surface, creating a tension between presence and trace. This ambiguity gives the work a quiet intensity.
Material plays a defining role. The woven structure introduces depth through variation in tone and density, allowing light to shift subtly across the surface. The result is a composition that feels grounded and tactile without losing clarity.
Les empreintes stands as a rare example of Brassaï’s work in tapestry. It preserves the immediacy of his photographic vision while expanding it into a medium where texture and touch become central to the image.
