Originally designed around 1927, artistic rug Jaune 9 reflects Fernand Léger’s fascination with the geometry and rhythm of the modern industrial world. Unlike traditional Cubism, Léger developed what critics later called “Tubism,” a style built from bold cylindrical forms, strong outlines, and vibrant blocks of color.

The composition of Jaune 9 is anchored by a luminous yellow ground that supports a series of interlocking black and white shapes. These elements move across the surface like mechanical components in motion, creating a sense of energy and balance. Léger approached composition almost architecturally, building the image from clear structural forms and strong graphic contrasts.

This rug was produced around 1960 through the collaboration of Marie Cuttoli and Galerie Lucie Weill in Paris. Cuttoli played a central role in encouraging leading modern artists—including Picasso, Arp, and Léger—to translate their work into woven form. The design itself dates to Léger’s early experiments for Cuttoli’s Maison Myrbor, making it one of the earliest models he created for textile production.

Hand-knotted in wool and issued in an edition of 100, far fewer examples were ultimately realized, making documented pieces such as this edition 15 particularly desirable. The woven signature “LEGER” and edition number appear on the reverse.

With its bold color, clear geometry, and strong graphic presence, Jaune 9 reflects Léger’s belief that modern art should be as direct and functional as the architecture of the modern city. The rug transforms his machine-age visual language into a vibrant composition designed to animate the floor of a modern interior.
