Designed around 1948–1950, artistic rug Mongouste reflects Joan Miró’s playful approach to the natural world and his fascination with transforming animals into surreal symbols. Rather than depicting a literal mongoose, Miró reduces the creature to a series of bold shapes and expressive lines, turning the animal into a lively abstract character.

At the center of the composition appears a dark biomorphic form that suggests the body of the animal. Small protruding shapes and circular elements hint at eyes, limbs, and movement, while scattered marks around the figure create a sense of energy and motion. Miró often treated animals as imaginative beings within a larger dreamlike universe, and his Mongouste rug captures that spirit perfectly.

The composition is set against a soft ivory ground and punctuated with Miró’s characteristic palette of red, yellow, and blue. These bright colors seem to float across the surface, giving the rug a light, almost weightless quality. Small star-like marks scattered across the design further connect the scene to Miró’s recurring imagery of the sky and cosmos.

This rug was produced in Paris through the collaboration between Marie Cuttoli and Galerie Lucie Weill, whose workshops were responsible for bringing many of the most important modern artists into textile production. Miró worked closely with Cuttoli’s atelier, often providing detailed cartoons so that the weavers could accurately reproduce the rhythm of his lines and forms.

Hand-knotted in wool and preserved in excellent condition, Mongouste belongs to the early period of Miró’s textile collaborations with Cuttoli, which are especially prized by collectors. The design reflects Miró’s ability to combine humor, imagination, and abstraction into a composition that feels both spontaneous and carefully balanced.
