This grand Savonnerie rug with a central floral medallion was woven in Aubusson, France during the Napoleon III period in the mid-19th century. Measuring an impressive 275 x 177 inches and executed in dense hand-knotted wool pile, the carpet reflects the extraordinary level of craftsmanship achieved by the Aubusson workshops during the height of the Second Empire.

Although the term “Savonnerie” originally referred to the royal carpet manufactory established in Paris in the seventeenth century, the weavers of Aubusson adopted and perfected the same luxurious pile technique during the nineteenth century. Their workshops became central to the production of monumental carpets commissioned for aristocratic residences and the grand interiors of France and beyond.

The design is organized around a richly developed central floral medallion, surrounded by a carefully balanced arrangement of scrolling ornament and decorative cartouches. This structured composition reflects the neoclassical principles that guided much of French decorative design during the period, while Rococo-inspired elements introduce movement and elegance throughout the field.

The palette follows the refined tonal harmony characteristic of Savonnerie weaving, combining soft ivory and champagne grounds with accents of dusty rose, celadon green, and warm antique gold. These luminous colors were traditionally intended to complement the gilded architectural moldings, marble fireplaces, and painted ceilings of formal salons and reception rooms.

At this monumental scale, the rug was clearly conceived for a significant interior such as a grand salon or ceremonial dining room within a château or Parisian hôtel particulier. Its exceptional preservation is particularly noteworthy, as carpets of this size from the mid-19th century often show substantial wear.

Coming from a French private collection and preserved in perfect condition, this Savonnerie rug stands as an impressive example of the refined artistry and decorative ambition that defined French carpet weaving during the Second Empire.
