At this year’s Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, Boccara Gallery will present a selection of important twentieth-century tapestries, highlighted by Les Zèbres by Victor Vasarely. Considered the founding figure of Op Art, Vasarely developed a rigorous visual language based on geometry, optical movement, and the systematic exploration of form. Les Zèbres, one of his most celebrated early compositions, reveals the artist’s fascination with perception, where the intertwined animals emerge from a precise network of black and white lines that seem to shift and vibrate before the eye.
Transposed into tapestry, Vasarely’s graphic composition acquires a new depth and material presence. The subtle interplay of wool threads softens the strict contrasts of the design while preserving the dynamic optical tension that defines the work. Woven in Aubusson in a limited edition, the tapestry reflects the remarkable collaboration between leading modern artists and the historic weaving ateliers, a partnership that played a central role in the renewal of tapestry during the twentieth century.
Alongside Les Zèbres, our presentation will include significant tapestries by Sonia Delaunay, Alexander Calder, and Man Ray, illustrating how some of the most influential figures of modern art embraced the medium of tapestry as an extension of their artistic vision.
