The Pyracantha tapestry highlights the personal artistic vision of Frédérique Bachellerie, a master weaver and co-founder of the renowned Atelier 3 in Paris. Throughout her career, Bachellerie collaborated with many major artists, translating their designs into complex woven works. In this tapestry, however, she takes on the dual role of artist and weaver, demonstrating her own exploration of texture, light, and natural form through the medium of tapestry.
The composition centers on the dense foliage and bright berries of the pyracantha plant, often known as firethorn. Rather than presenting a simple botanical study, Bachellerie transforms the subject into a rich visual environment where branches, leaves, and clusters of berries interlace across the surface. The composition balances careful observation of nature with subtle abstraction, allowing the structure of the plant to evolve into an intricate network of shapes and colors.
Handwoven in wool at Atelier 3, the tapestry reveals the remarkable technical possibilities of contemporary weaving. Through delicate variations in thread color and weaving density, Bachellerie creates a convincing sense of depth and luminosity. The berries appear vivid against the darker foliage, while the layered threads give the surface a tactile presence that changes with shifting light.
At a nearly square format and substantial scale, the Pyracantha tapestry creates the impression of a living botanical scene unfolding across the wall. The interplay of natural forms, color, and texture transforms the image into a richly atmospheric textile, bringing a sense of vitality and quiet natural beauty into the architectural space where it is displayed.
