This monumental Mid-19th Century Savonnerie rug with a central medallion design represents the height of French decorative weaving during the period of renewed luxury that defined the Second Empire. Savonnerie carpets trace their origins to the royal workshops established in Paris during the seventeenth century to supply rugs for the palaces of the French crown. By the mid-nineteenth century, the celebrated weaving centers of Aubusson had adopted the Savonnerie hand-knotted pile technique, producing luxurious carpets for aristocratic residences, grand hôtels particuliers, and formal reception rooms across Europe.

The design of this Mid-19th Century Savonnerie rug follows a classical central medallion composition. At the center, an elaborate floral medallion anchors the field, surrounded by delicate garlands and scrolling foliage arranged with the symmetry characteristic of French interior design. The surrounding field is woven with a subtle diaper lattice, creating texture and visual depth while allowing the decorative elements to stand in clear relief.

Rich Rocaille ornament appears throughout the composition, particularly within the corner spandrels where shell motifs, acanthus scrolls, and overflowing cornucopias evoke the exuberant decorative language associated with the Louis XV revival. These motifs are rendered in a refined palette of ivory, powder blue, rose, and warm gold tones that would have complemented the gilded paneling and architectural moldings of nineteenth-century French salons.
