This elegant Savonnerie rug featuring a whimsical floral basket medallion was woven in Aubusson, France during the mid-19th century, a period when the region’s workshops produced some of the most refined hand-knotted carpets in Europe. Executed in dense wool pile and measuring 173 x 149 in, the rug reflects the continued influence of the Savonnerie tradition while presenting a scale suited to more intimate formal interiors.

By the nineteenth century, Aubusson weavers had fully adopted the luxurious Savonnerie pile technique originally associated with the royal manufactories of Paris. These carpets were prized for their ability to translate highly detailed ornamental designs into a richly textured woven surface, combining technical precision with decorative elegance.

The composition centers on a striking oval medallion featuring a finely rendered and overflowing floral basket. Roses, chrysanthemums, and a variety of blossoms are arranged in a carefully balanced bouquet that recalls the painterly still-life traditions popular in nineteenth-century decorative design. Subtle shading within the wool allows the flowers to appear almost three-dimensional, giving the central composition a lively and naturalistic character.

The floral arrangement is set against a deep contrasting ground within the oval field, creating a dramatic visual emphasis that draws the eye toward the center of the rug. Surrounding this focal point, the composition is framed by delicate ornamental borders and richly decorated corner areas filled with additional floral sprays, ensuring that the design remains active and harmonious across the entire surface.

With its nearly square proportions, the rug would have been ideally suited for a formal salon or reception room, where it could anchor a seating arrangement while allowing the central floral composition to remain fully visible.

Preserved in excellent condition and originating from a French private collection, this Savonnerie rug represents a refined example of the decorative artistry achieved by the Aubusson workshops during the nineteenth century.
