This striking imperial blue Savonnerie rug was woven in Aubusson, France during the mid-19th century, a period associated with the decorative exuberance of the Napoleon III era. Executed in hand-knotted wool pile and measuring 285 x 169 inches, the carpet reflects the technical mastery of the Aubusson workshops, which during the nineteenth century produced some of the most elaborate Savonnerie-style carpets in Europe.

The composition is distinguished by its striking deep blue ground, a color rarely encountered in Savonnerie carpets of this period, which more often favor softer pastel palettes. This rich imperial blue field creates a dramatic backdrop that highlights the finely drawn ornamental elements woven across the surface, allowing the floral decoration and scrolling motifs to appear with remarkable clarity.

At the center of the composition lies an elegant cream-toned medallion framed by acanthus leaves and delicate garlands of flowers. A floral rosette anchors the center of the medallion, reinforcing the balanced symmetry that characterizes classical Savonnerie design. The surrounding field is animated by scrolling Rocaille ornament and richly developed corner spandrels, where large shell motifs and flowing foliage introduce movement and decorative depth.

Encircling the composition is a structured border rendered in warm red and cream tones, incorporating geometric and floral elements that frame the interior design. This border provides a visual anchor for the carpet, containing the lively interior ornament while reinforcing the architectural character typical of French decorative carpets of the period.

With its monumental dimensions and bold color contrast, the rug was clearly conceived for an important formal interior such as a ballroom, gallery, or grand reception room. Its scale would have allowed it to define the central area of a large ceremonial space while harmonizing with the ornate architectural decoration of nineteenth-century French interiors.

Preserved in excellent condition and originating from a French private collection, this Savonnerie rug offers a compelling example of Aubusson weaving at the height of the Second Empire’s decorative ambition.
